Ernest Leon Dean, 80, of Elkton, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday morning, Aug. 24, 2009, at his home surrounded by family.

Mr. Dean was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Harry L. and Lottie R. Hensley Dean.

Leon owned and operated Dean's Texaco service station for 15 years in Elkton and Dean's Texaco Heating Oil until November 2008. He was a salesman for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. and had worked at Wayne Manufacturing in Waynesboro. He was a lifetime member of the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church near Elkton, where he served as Lay Leader, Superintendent, Youth Counselor, Sunday school teacher and Choir member. He was a member of the Junior Order of American Mechanics and an avid bowler and gardener.

He married Margaret E. Wyant Dean, who preceded him in death June 7, 1987. Surviving children are daughters Louella A. Meadows and husband Allen, Karen Urbanek and husband Paul, and Barbara (Linkie) Hottinger and husband Dennis, all of Elkton; one sister, Margaret Breeden; two brothers, Randal F. Dean and Maynard W. Dean, all of Elkton; four grandchildren, Everett Lane Lucas (Leon was his father figure), April M. Eckels, and Kenny A. Meadows, all of Elkton, and Travis T. Lawson of Harrisonburg; a stepgrandson, Paul W. Urbanek Jr. of Florida; and great-grandsons, Nicholas Eckels and Emmett Kline-Lawson. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Blanche Dean, Lois Eppard and Geneieve Sillmon.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday morning, Aug. 27, 2009, at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church near Elkton with Pastor Nona F. Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Dean home at anytime.
