Traffic Accident Near Benge Is Fatal for Barry W. Nissen
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) for Barry Wendell Nissen, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nissen, who died from injuries received in an automobile accident south of Benge early Sunday morning.
The funeral services will be at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville with Rev. Alfred Waln officiating. A military graveside service will follow at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery.
Nissen, who had recently completed a six-months' marine training program and had planned to return to the University of Idaho this fall, was on his way home from the Joe W. Gray farm when the accident occurred on the Benge-Washtucna road 6.8 miles south of Benge.
He and the Gray's daughter, Sally Jo, had attended a dance in Washtucna. Shortly after Nissen left the Gray ranch and was on his way home to Ritzville, his 1959-model foreign car left the road about two miles north of the Gray farm at approximately 1:45 a.m.
State Patrolman Lloyd Danielson said the vehicle was traveling north after completing a left curve just south of Ralph Snyder's Bar U ranch.
The officer said the car went off the blacktop to the right and apparently Nissen overcorrected to the left. The vehicle skidded across the roadway to the left 90 feet, went off the roadway and rolled two and a quarter times.
During the roll, Nissen was thrown from the car and it passed over him.
Danielson said Clinton John (Skip) Allert of Washtucna discovered Nissen and the wreckage about 3 a.m. Nissen was dead on arrival at the Adams County Memorial hospital.
The death brought Adams county's traffic toll to two during 1961, three less than during the same period last year.
Nissen was born July 6, 1940, in Ritzville and had lived here all his life.
He was graduated from Ritzville high school in 1958 and attended the University of Idaho for two years, where he was affiliated with Phil Delta Theta fraternity.
He enlised in a six-months' marine training program and had basic training at San Diego, Calif., from last October to April. He made the highest grade of the recruits he was with on both the induction and basic training tests.
Nissen recently received the rank of private first-class in the marine reserves and was planning to take two-weeks off from work at his father's farm to attend summer camp this summer.
As a junior he planned to study medical technology in Idaho this fall.
He was a member of Trinity Methodist church.
Pallbearers at the funeral will include Carroll Hayden, Norman Slonaker, Jerry Schell, Peter Peot, David Nauditt and James Krehbiel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ross Pfann, Arnold Moeller, Dennis Rieger, Dennis Wellsandt, Gary Galbreath, Dennis Hille, Ron Kison, Percy Schrag, Dennis Bafus, Larry Stanfield, Gene Davidson, Bruce Greene, James Bennett, James Mays, Sgt. James C. Chamberlin and Sgt. Mortimer Sullivan.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister, Brenda, at the home.
The family said memorial contributions could be made to medical research.
