AMBOY - James "Jim" Herbert Larson, age 71, of Amboy, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Vernon Center, with Father Brian Sutton officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthews Catholic Cemetery, Vernon Center. Visitation will be at Spencer-Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago from 5-8 p.m., with a Prayer Service starting at 4:30. Jim was born on May 8, 1938, in Winnebago, Minn., the son of Herbert and Wylma (Marienau) Larson. He attended Amboy Public Schools until 9th grade. Jim then completed his last three years of high school at the Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca and graduated in 1956. Jim married his wife of 50 years, Donnis (Lawson) at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Vernon Center on August 7, 1959. After high school Jim farmed for three years in rural Amboy, then worked for Hubbard Mill Research Farm by Mankato. He became a Deputy Sheriff of the Blue Earth County Sheriffs Department where he worked for 31 years before retiring as Chief Deputy in July 1993. Jim then worked as a Bailiff for Blue Earth County for four years. Jim also farmed in rural Amboy for 20 years, retiring in 2008.
Jim was in the Army National Guard for six years and was a long time member of St. Matthews Catholic Church. He was a member of the Police and Peace Officers Association, the Minnesota State Sheriffs Association and was a member of the Riverside Country Club. Jim enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Clear Lake near Aitkin and wintering in Yuma, Ariz. Jim also enjoyed traveling, golfing, spending time with family, grandchildren, and friends.
Jim is survived by his wife Donnis of Amboy, daughter Shelli (Neal) Grover of Amboy, son Kirk (Debbie) Larson of Republic, Mo., daughter Jodi Larson of Eagan, eight grandchildren, one sister Ellen (Roger) Tipler of Amboy, and sister-in-law Bev Larson of Devils Lake, N.D.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother John Larson.
