Terrissa was the daughter of Eli F. Mercer and Nancy Thompson. Terrissa was born 22, Feb. 1822 Amite County, Mississippi. In 1829, as a young girl she moved with her family to what is known today as Egypt, Wharton County, Texas.
Her father, Eli Mercer, was a delegate for the Mina (Bastrop) District First Consultation and Convention, at San Felipe De Austin 1 Oct 1832. He also fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, was a member of the first Baptist State Convention, and was a charter trustee of Baylor University. Eli became a prominent plantation owner in Egypt and is said to have been the first producer of sugar in Texas.
Terrissa and John J. Lackey were married 18, Dec. 1840 in Colorado County (now part of Wharton County), Texas. John J. Lackey was a veteran of the Texas Revolution and also of the Civil War.
