LEWISTON -- Mildred Yvonne Merritt, 73, completed her earthly journey on Oct. 29, 2003, after receiving a terminal diagnosis.

Yvonne was born on Oct. 13, 1930, to John Franklin and Yvette Coltrin, in Long Beach, Calif. She was raised in Huntington Beach, Calif., with five sisters and two brothers. Yvonne was educated in California, and after graduating high school, she worked as a nanny on Balboa Island.

Harold and Yvonne first met at an LDS Stake Conference in Long Beach. After a whirlwind romance, she married her knight in shining armor, Harold H. Merritt, on Sept. 1, 1951. He was the answer to her prayers. They became eternal partners when they were sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on July 26, 1956. A love like theirs is a rarity in this world. Her loving husband spent the many last years of her life lovingly caring for her, and still cares for their handicapped son Scott.

Yvonne was very active in the LDS Church and held many church positions throughout her life. She served as Sunday School secretary and Nursery teacher as a young woman. She also served as a Primary teacher for nine years in California. She spent the last 13 years of her life as the editor for the ward newsletter, a calling she truly enjoyed. Her testimony and faith were her strength and comfort throughout her life.

Her greatest calling in life was that of wife and mother. Her joy came from the birth of her 12 children, raising them and watching them grow and becoming parents raising their own children. Mom passed on her love for reading to many of her children. Her love for books helped her pass time the last few years of her life. She was also grateful for the privilege of being able to raise her handicapped son.

Yvonne is survived by her loving husband, Harold; and their children, Cynthia (John) Schroeder, Harold (Connie) Merritt Jr., Jan Merritt, Linda (Jerry) Marlin, James (Lisa) Merritt, Steven Merritt, Joann Merritt, Yvette Bair, David (Sheri) Merritt, Jerry (Chris) Merritt and Scott Merritt; 26 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sisters, Eugenie (Bill) Wilson, Jeanette (Bob) Manaki, Leona (John) Myers, Simonne (Bob) Clutts and Mary Johnson; a brother, Andre (Ari) Coltrin; and many nieces and nephews.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael; and a brother, Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2003, at the Lewiston 1st Ward. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Allen-Hall Mortuary. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Interment will be in the Lewiston City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her behalf to CETC, c/o Cache Valley Bank.
