PIONEER OF SHERIDAN PASSES AWAY JAN. 20

O.M. Faulconer Born In The Dalles Sept. 2, 1869

SHERIDAN, Jan. 27 – Oscar Marcellus Faulconer died at his home in Sheridan, Jan. 20, after a week's illness which followed three and one-half years of invalidism. Mr. Faulconer was born of pioneer parents, Sept. 2, 1859, near The Dalles. His father, was of Kentucky stock, coming to Oregon in 1851. His mother, Caroline Bainbridge. Mr. Faulconer came with his parents at the age of six years to Sheridan where he lived until he was 18. He then went to Neskowin where he lived for 15 years and where he married Miss Ida Bowers. To this union two sons were born, Roy, of Woodburn, and Guy of Sheridan. The mother died in 1893. In 1899 he was united in marriage to Miss Claudia Steward, to which union was born one daughter, Mrs. Dwight French of Klamath Falls. He also leaves three sisters and two brothers; Mrs. Clara Rowell, and Mrs. Olive Waugaman of Sheridan and Mrs. Alice Wyatt of California, J.D. Faulconer of Anacortes, Wash., and H.T. Faulconer of Sheridan. One granddaughter, Marjory Faulconer of Woodburn, also several nieces and nephews.

A host of warm friends and neighbors feel keenly the loss of a sterling character in the community in the death of Mr. Faulconer.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Christian church with the Rev. A.F. Van Slyke of McMinnville officiating. Burial was made in the Masonic cemetery.

THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF OREGON 1811-1912

0.M. FAULCONER, proprietor of the Red Front Livery Stable at Sheridan, was born near The Dalles, Oregon, September 2, 1859, a son of Marcellus and Caroline (Baunbridge) Faulconer, both natives of Missouri, the father being of Scotch parentage. He was reared in Missouri and crossed the plains in 1849, at the time of the discovery of gold, locating in the mining regions, but the following year, in 1850, he came to Sheridan, taking up a donation claim three miles west of the town. Later he went to eastern Oregon where he engaged in freighting for five or six years, returning in 1862 to Sheridan, where he spent his remaining days, dying in 1907.

He was a farmer and also engaged in mercantile business in Sheridan, where he erected a great many of the present buildings. He was a republican in politics, a very prosperous man, and highly respected. His wife crossed the plains with her parents in 1852 and was married in Oregon. She died in 1911.

Six children were born to them: Alice, who is the wife of L. L. Shortridge, of Willamina, Oregon; 0.M., of this review; Ollie, the wife of .J. A. Waugaman, of McMinnville, Oregon; Clara, the wife of Lee Rowell, of Sheridan, Oregon; J.D., a resident of Anacortes, Washington; and H.T., of Sheridan Oregon.

0.M. Faulconer was educated in the common schools of Oregon and from his youth remained at home, working in connection with his father until the latter's death, tie operated and managed the farm until two years ago, when he engaged in the livery business, buying an excellent barn, known as the Red Front Livery Stable, which contains eight head of horses. He also owns a beautiful residence in Sheridan.

In 1886 Mr. Faulconer wedded Miss Ida Bower and two children were born to them: Roy, who is in a store in Sheridan; and Guy, who is in the livery barn. Mr. Faulconer's first wife died seven years after their marriage and in 1899 he was married to Miss Claudia Steward. They have one child, Alda, now eight years of age. In politics Mr. Faulconer is a republican. Both he and his wife are members of the Christian church, of which he is also a deacon. Having passed so many years of his life near Sheridan, he is widely and favorably known and his just business methods and upright character have won for him a prominent place among his associates.
