A native and resident of Baton Rouge, she was a retired schoolteacher with 33 years of service in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. She departed this life at 11:22 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Baton Rouge Healthcare Center after a brief illness. She was born July 24, 1921, to the late Robert Jr. and Edith Taylor Houston. She was a graduate of McKinley Senior High School and received her bachelor's degree from Southern University A&M College and her master's degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. She did further study in educational counseling at LSU and Southeastern University in Hammond. She was married for 57 years to Shelly Glen Stephens Sr., who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Charles Houston Sr.; three sisters, Thelma Houston Johnson, Hazel Houston Carter and Edith Houston Jackson. She is survived by a son, Shelly Glen Stephens Jr. and wife Joyce; two daughters, Synda E'Lois Baker and husband Ron and Alicia "Lissy" Estelle Stephens, all of Baton Rouge; four grandchildren, Eric L. Stephens and wife LaTristaca, of Richmond, Va., Terry P. Terrell, of Baton Rouge, Chazz R. Baker and I'Ari G. Baker, both of Baton Rouge; and five great-grandchildren, Trinity V. Stephens and Chloe Stephens, of Richond, Kenyon Terrell Jr., Ra'chelle B. Terrell and Stephen Terrell, of Charlottesville, Va. She is also survived by a sister, Louise Houston Turner and husband Robert Jr., of Houston; a brother, Herbert A. Houston Sr., of Pontiac, Mich.; several nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends. She taught at Northwestern for 23 years and Istrouma High School from 1970-1979. She left an indelible impression on the many students she taught. She was faithful to God, devoted to her family and loyal to her country. She was also a caring and generous person who loved to help others in what ever way she could. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Organization. She was widely known and recognized for her involvement in her community and was also a member of the American Heart Association-LA Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for 65 years, Women's Council of Greater Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Mental Health, Phi Upsilon Omicron (S.U.), NAACP Youth Council (co-sponsor), American Cancer Society, Future Homemakers of America (co-sponsor), a 4-H Club blue ribbon champion (always undefeated!) and on the Governor's Special Commission on Educational Services during Edwin Edwards' administration. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Sunday, Dec. 28, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Final viewing at Wesley United Methodist Church on Monday, Dec. 29, from 8 a.m. until a Delta Omega service at 10 a.m. Religious service at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. E. Andrew Goff. Interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery.
