William McCutcheon
This venerable citizen and prominent business man died suddenly of apoplexy yesterday afternoon at four o'clock, in his office at No 157 Wood st. at the advanced age of seventy-four years. Deceased was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1805, and came to this country in 1831. Soon after his arrival here he commenced business as a wholesale grocer in connection with his cousin, Robert McCutcheon, and the firm of W & R McCutcheon was one of the oldest and most widely known in the city. The deceased continued in this business from 1831 till about 1860, a period of nearly thirty years. About the year 1833 Mr McCutcheon was married to a young lady of Pittsburgh, who died shortly afterward. A few years thereafter he was married a second time, to a lady of Charleston, OH, who survives him, together with seven children. These are Mr James N McCutcheon, who is in business in the oil country, Mr Charles McCutcheon, of the firm of McCutcheon & Son, Mrs A N Martin, Mrs Charles H McCracken, and Misses Nellie and Lucy and Mr William McCutcheon, The three last names residing at home with their mother.. Mr Mccutcheon, after quitting the grocery business in 1860, embarked in the oil and general brokerage business, in which he was engaged up to the time of his death. He had therefore been in active business for nearly half a century, and in all that long period he maintained a reputation, acquired early in his business career, for strict and unswerving integrity. He many years ago became a member of the Sixth Presbyterian Church, and had lived the life of a consistent Christian. The remains were conveyed last evening to the family residence on Neville street, EastEnd. The time at which the funeral will take place will be announced hereafter.
