Jacob Durst was born at Dettenhausen, Württemberg, Germany, and died at his home in Mason, Texas. He came to America in 1846 landing in Indianola, later moving to Fredericksburg in 1847 and lived there until nearly grown, then moving to Mason County where he lived near the mouth of Hermann's Creek, and soon married Miss Sophia Adrian, step-daughter of Henry Leifeste, Sr. To this union, five sons and one daughter were born.

Mr. Durst served three years in the Confederate War and helped to fight the Indians from this country in the 1860s, having been in several Indian fights. He was a good Christian, united with the German Methodist Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg when quite young. He was a devout Christian. Services were held at Plehweville on Friday officiated by Rev. Schreiber, Rev Rader, and Rev. Moerner.

My great-great uncle Johann Jacob Durst was born in Dettenhausen, Tuebigen, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
He married Sophia Leifeste on 12/08/1870 in Mason County.
He was the son of Johannes Durst and Margerethe Christine Binder Durst.
John Jacob served as a scout in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, between 1862-1865. He was a private in the 1st Texas Calvary Regiment, Company E, CSA, also known as Buchel's Texas Mounted Rifles.
