Gessel Marriner Nielsen passed away on Sept. 26, 2003, at the Logan Valley Nursing Home.

Gessel was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Providence, to Marriner Wilford and Margaret Gessel Nielsen. He married Bena Nelson in the Logan LDS Temple on June 28, 1940. Together they raised five children. Bena passed away on July 29, 1993.

He attended Cache County Schools and graduated from South Cache High School. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the Philippines.

Gessel worked for Ace Raymond Construction and retired from the Defense Supply Depot in Ogden. After retirement, he worked at Logan High School.

Gessel was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings in the church. His most recent, and his favorite, was that of temple officiator. He loved the people he worked with and always had great stories to tell of his work in the temple.

Gessel is survived by his five children: Arthur (Wende), Salt Lake City, Dennis (Vicki, deceased), Logan, Alan (Menam), Orem, Susan and Greg (Becky), both of Logan. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, his wife and a daughter-in-law.

The family would like to express our appreciation to Intermountain Hospice and the Logan Valley Nursing Home for the tender care they have given Dad for the last six weeks.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Logan 14th Ward LDS Chapel, 600 S. 100 West, with Bishop Darrell Reese conducting. Friends may call from 6 to 8 on Monday evening at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, and from 10:30 to 11:45 Tuesday morning at the Logan 14th Ward Chapel. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online to the family at Allen-Hall Mortuary.
