Ezekiel Collinson "Zekie" Wood was the son of Robert Franklin Wood and Sarah Ellen Stevens. He married his first cousin Mary Susan "Mamie" Grover on 12 Dec 1905 in Calvert County, Maryland. Their mothers were sisters, sharing the same parents, Francis Stevens and Sarah Jane Collinson.

On the 1880 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found farmer Robert Wood, 43; wife Sarah E Wood, 32; sons or daughters: Wm. F. Wood, 15; Robert F.A. Wood, 12; E. Chas. Wood (this is Ezekiel Collinson Wood), 8; Bertha O. Wood, 7 and Cora E.S. Wood, 5, plus an 18 yr old servant all MD born.

On the 1900 (very hard to read cursive script) District 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found many Wood, plus Stevens, Hardesty and Harrison families close together on the same page. Farmer, Robt F Wood, 69, Jan/Jun 1840; wife of 36 years, Sarah E, 50, Jan 1850; son (?) Eziah C, 36, Jun 1875; daughter Cora E, 19, Jun 1880, all MD born. On either side of them is (his son) Robt F Wood, 32, Sep 1867; wife of 6 years, Ruth E, 30, 1870; dau Ida M, 4, un 1895 and son Lane F, 2, Apr 1898. Plus (his son) Wm F Wood, 36; Feb 1864; wife Mary M, 37, Feb 1863; dau Rachel J, Sep 1896 and son Wm, 2, Oct 1898, all MD born. Note: the census taker's hand writing, spelling and math were all pretty bad.

Ezekiel inherited his father's homestead, less 20 acres that went to his brother Fielder, per his father's will. "To my son Ezekiel C. Wood I give my home farm on which I now reside less the 20 acres above. Plus the tobacco prize oxcart, 2 cultivators, two plows and 1 nag-larrow (?) and 1 wagons and 1 1st choice yoke oxen and to pay (Zeke's mom) Sarah E. Wood $100.00 annually as long as she may live and to give a comfortable home to Sarah E. Wood..."

His nephew, JLH remembered (in 1984): he was a really good farmer and grew a large crop of tobacco. It was a good 1/4 mile from the main road to his house and faced south. Uncle Fielder's house was more east from this house. Uncle Zeke's house was up a rather high hill. Plus he remembered that Ezekiel's home was about 100' downgrade across from the family Stevens home entrance. (The old censuses support this, Francis Stevens, Sr. and either Saml Wood or Stevens' son in law Robert Wood lived next to each other. Robert Wood bought his elder brother Richard's property when he passed, probably belonging to their father, Saml Wood. ) There was a peach orchard and big meadow for the cattle and horses. His grandmother raised turkeys, geese and chickens. They had a big cattle barn and horse stable, too. Once it had a paneled fenced yard. The house was on the right and the barn/stable were on the left. Plus they had a big garden. As a child he would go there for Christmas dinner and especially enjoyed Aunt Mamie's (Ezekiel Wood's wife) Minihaha cake. The house had a front porch, a parlor room and a flower room on the left that Mamie stored her plants for the winter. He believed this house was built on to, 1 or 2 times. His grandmothers room was only 1 story high and probably built on. He recalled it was a large farm, maybe close to 300 acres and probably used to be 2 farms.

On the 1910 Chaney, Calvert Co., MD Census, I found farmer Ezekiel C Wood, 39; wife of 4 years, Mary I Wood, 34, had 2 kids, both living; daughters: Mabel E Wood, 2 and Gladys C Wood, 1, plus mother Sarah E Wood, 63, all MD born. This would be his last census, dying 6 years later.

From the best I can tell, Ezekiel's home was (is) NE of the Mount Harmony cemetery on current Quince View Lane at 8341. Family used to visit there often. Apparently it was built in "1910" so there are unknown details about where his parents lived exactly on the 95+ acres. Was it razed, built over (commonly done) or what? Ezekiel lived there with his mom and wife in his last known years.

He died way too early at age 45 years 7 months 4 days. The Calvert Co. Register of Wills, opened his probate 10 Oct 1916 and closed it 12 Aug 1919, #1067SUPP, under Ezekiel C. Wood.

There is a stained glass window dedicated to Ezekiel in the nave, at Mount Harmony Church. It says "In Memory of Ezekiel C. Wood by his Wife and Children. "The design at the top appears to be a sheath of wheat with the wording "I am the Bread of Life". The window is located in the front of the church near the pulpit area by the organ." Thanks MP.

Map photo on right shows location "B" Ezekiel's and Mamie's homestead - formerly his mothers and "A" is Mt. Harmony Cemetery (believed to be front 1/4 acre given by Francis Stevens prior to his death). It is unknown if it was built over his father, Robert F. Wood's home. Robert purchased his elder brother Richard's land when he died and it was likely his father's, Samuel Wood's homestead. They all lived in Mt. Harmony.
