LTGEN JAMES T. MOORE USMC

Native of Barnwell, South Carolina and 1916 graduate of The Citadel. Served as an Infantry Officer with the Fourth Marine Regiment in Santo Domingo; became a Naval Aviator in 1921, later attended the Army Advanced Flying School and the Air Corps Tactical School, 1938 graduate of the Naval War College.
His flying duties included tours in Guam, The Phillipines and China; he served as Commanding Officer of Observation Squadron 9 in Haiti and The Virgin Islands, Executive Officer of Marine Aircraft Group 1 at Quantico, Virginia and as Air Officer to the Commanding General of Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. In 1940 he was assigned as Chief of the U.S. Aviation Mission in Lima, Peru and by order of the countries President was appointed Commanding General of the Peruvian Air Force; he was promoted to Brigadier General in September of 1942.
He subsequently became Commanding General of the 4th Marine Aircraft Defense Wing in Hawaii, then assumed duties as Chief of Staff for the 1st Marine Air Wing and Marine Air Forces, South Pacific; in his subsequent job as Deputy Commander he was the immediate superior to Major "Pappy" Boyington, the leader of the famous "Black Sheep Squadron" and was featured as a major character in the 1970s TV show "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" portrayed by actor Simon Oakland. He was elevated to Commanding General in late 1943 and in early 1944 was promoted to Major General.
He next took command of the 2d Marine Air Wing and in early 1945 was appointed Commanding General, Aircraft of Fleet Marine Force, Pacific until his retirement in November of 1946 when he was honorarily advanced to the grade of Lieutenant General. His military awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit, he is honored as a Distinguished Alumni by The Citadel Alumni Association.
