A Magnificent Life

"Bob" Davis departed this world the evening of Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at his home in Lacey, Washington, his wife of 60 years, Margaret Opal, by his side.

Born on April 28, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Bob was the oldest of four children born to Giles Cecil and Margaret Edna (Haehl) Davis. He graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Rose Poly (now Rose-Hulman) Institute of Technology in October of 1943, and enlisted in the United States Navy in November the same year, training as a pilot and Naval Air Instructor.

On August 28, 1945, he married his college sweetheart, Margaret O. Jean, at Whiting Field in Milton, Florida.

Bob was recruited by Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio and began his 38-year career with them in 1946, specializing in the development and formulation of synthetic detergents. i.e., Joy, Tide, Cheer, Cascade etc.

In 1984 he and his wife Margaret retired and moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to Hood Canal in Union, Washington, where Bob spent many hours in his garden perfecting and propagating his dahlia collection. His signature trademark became the bouquets that he freely shared with friends, family, and strangers that often stopped to admire his gardens.

He will be remembered for his devotion to his family; his love of animals; his warmth, kindness, and willingness to help others; his quick smile; and his blue eyes that twinkled until the end.

Bob leaves his dearly loved wife, Margaret, their three children and spouses, all of Washington State; six grandchildren and their spouses and three great-grandchildren. His beloved sister, sister-in-law, and sister and brother-in-law, all of Indiana; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death, as did his stepmother, Katharine Sage Cushman Davis, his two brothers, Richard Edward Davis (in childhood) and Kenneth Cecil Davis, and his son-in-law, John A. Haugen.

Please join his family for a Celebration of a Magnificent Life on Saturday, May 13, 2006, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Windmill Gardens in Sumner, Washington, followed by a buffet. The family asks that anyone wishing to make memorials do so in Bob's memory to the "Robert P. and Margaret J. Davis Scholarship Fund" at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 5500 Wabash Avenue CM #12, Terre Haute, Indiana, 47803.
