[below information from Gordon Cotton's article in Vicksburg Post (MS) 23 Aug 09.] The tombstone of Mrs. Mourning Bocock, who died in the 1880s, reads, "She Hath Done What She Could." Mrs. Mourning Bocock died in the 1880s. A local historian said she married thrice — once for love, then for money, and lastly for fame. Vicksburg's Emma Balfour knew her and tried to make a match with her and one of Dr. Balfour's kin, and though she was rich, the good man said she didn't have enough money to interest him, so she may have been hard to look at.

[below information provided by Linda Ames]
Died on her plantation known as "Waldwick", in Hale County, Ala. She had no children who survived infancy.
First husband was Josiah Patterson, whom she married on 13 December 1836, in Abbeville District, S.C. He died 23 July 1839. Second husband was Minor W. Gracey, whom she married 12 July 1842. He was born 20 March 1807, in Iredell Co., N.C., and died of yellow fever at Waldwick Plantation, 8 November 1853. He's also buried at St. Andrews Church Cemetery. Her third husband was Willis P. Bocock of Appamatox County, VA whom she married 13 December 1853. He was the sometime Attorney General of the State of Virginia, was taken prisoner during the Civil War, and died shortly after the death of his wife.
This comes from "Smith of Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Alabama, Section (or Chapter) IV, page 233.

Inscription

Above the base-stone it says:
"Although she sleeps, her memory doth live
And cherishing comfort to her mourners give
She followed virtue as her truest guide
Lived as a christian, as a christian died."
