James Richard Whitley, 75, of Stantonsburg died Wednesday. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Good News Advent Christian Church. Arrangements are by Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 U.S. 264 Alt. West. Burial will follow in church cemetery. The Rev. Julius Whitley and the Rev. Dennis Harrell will officiate.
He taught in the North Carolina Public School System for 34 years. He was a member and deacon at Good News Advent Christian Church and was an adult Sunday School Teacher for many years. He is survived by his wife, Marcelle Harrell Whitley; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gaye Whitley Shingleton of Rocky Mount, Rebekah Whitley Vaughan and David of Wilmington, Cynthia Whitley Baldwin and Matthew of Surf City; two granddaughters, Jessie Shingleton and Julia Shingleton; a grandson, Will Shingleton; two brothers, the Rev. Julius Whitley of Stantonsburg and Dr. Lester Whitley of Conway, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Lee and Elsie Grace Ellis Whitley and a brother, William Whitley.
The family will receive friends following the service and at other times the family will be at 7029 Gum Pond Rd. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to Good News Advent Christian Church, 7116 Gum Pond Rd., Stantonsburg, NC 27883.
