Annie Hayes, daughter of W.D. and Caroline (Harris) Hayes, and James Deveroux Markham were married in Florence, Alabama on 30 May 1872. James Markham was the son of Dr. James Bernard Markha and wife Eliza Croger (Massenburg) Markham.

When the Civil War broke out, James enlisted as a Confederate Soldier in the 32nd Alabama Infantry in 1861. At the ripe age of 18, he was again enlisted, May 15, 1862, to serve with the St. Clair Sharp Shooters, Company I, 58th Regiment till the end of the war. But as fate would have it, James suffered a wound to the knee at the Battle of Chickamauga. Although categorized as a slight wound, the injury was serious enough, he was unable to resume duty in the Infantry and was transferred to the Army Signal Corp. where he served till the end of the war. His company surrendered on May 4, 1865.

Years later, while visiting his only surviving child, Sadie, in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee, James died on 30 Sept. 1909. County Judge, George McCallum, buried James in Giles County. Following her husband's death, Annie gave his life insurance money to her daughter and son-in-law to purchase a very small and modest home. Her son-in-law, a brilliant young lawyer, was reduced to living as an invalid while suffering a slow death from tuberculosis. He died 1 Dec. 1915.

Annie herself, suffered a stroke and was paralyzed until her death. No longer able to care for herself and confined to her room, she remaine with her daughter, Sadie, in Giles County, Tennessee until her death.
