Phillis Joan McGhie Walker, surrounded by her family, passed away peacefully, Aug. 19, 2009, at her sister's home in Las Vegas. After a year-long battle with cancer, she died at the age of 63. Joan was born July 27, 1946, to Everett A. and Beatrice Chase McGhie, in Salt Lake City.
Moving to Las Vegas in 1964, she married Braxton Walker, later divorced and helped raise his son, Lee, until Lee's death in 1980.
Joan learned that she had a talent for writing song lyrics and in 1992, moved to Nashville to pursue her dream. She joined the Tennessee Songwriters Association, and over 16 years, won each award offered. Many of her 300 songs written have been picked up by promoters. "So You" and "The Dreamer" were among her best. Joan worked for banks in Las Vegas and Nashville, the ER at Vanderbilt Hospital and was with the Law Office of Hughes and Coleman at the time of her illness.
In 1995, Joan received her endowment in the Las Vegas Temple and was active in all her church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Relief Society President until she returned home. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mac McGhie; son, Lee; and beloved brother-in-law, Paul (Claire) Rank.
She is survived by her twin sister, Jane (Norman) Davis; sister, Claire Rank; brother, Gordon McGhie; and many caring nieces and nephews.
Our beloved Joannie was kind, loving and caring to everyone. We love her and we shall miss her so.
Viewing will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the LDS Church, at Robindale and Buffalo. Viewing will be 10-11 a.m., with services following, both at the Chapel. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Centerville Cemetery, in Centerville, Utah.
