Mary was the daughter of Francis Edward and Mary Louise Dalrymple Dieteman. She grew up in Erie and graduated from Villa Maria Academy in 1966 and Saint Vincent School of Nursing in 1969.

Before her retirement Mary worked for Indian Health Services, working with the Hualapai and Havasupai Indians in Supi, Arizona.

Mary volunteered many hours to several different organizations. During her time with the American Red Cross she aided victims of the Albion, PA, Tornado, Hurricane Andrew in FL, the L.A. Earthquake, and U.S. Air flight 427 crash in Pittsburgh. She was also a volunteer for SafeNet, the Ecclesia Center, Hospice of Metropolitan Erie, and was a Lay Minister and Eucharistic Minister for Immaculate Conception and St. George Roman Catholic Churches.

Mary was the co-founder of P.A.L.S., People After Loss from Suicide. There she offered grief counseling and support to family and friends after suicide.

Mary had many hobbies including bird watching, astronomy, fishing and woodworking. She was an avid car buff and was the first woman to be elected President of the Presque Isle Antique Car Club. She also enjoyed attending stock car races, watching her son, John, compete.

Mary is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Alice Denny; her parents, one brother, Charles E. Dieteman; and a niece, Mary Helen Dieteman.
She is survived by her son, John F. Denny, his wife Jessica A. (Bills), and their children Charles Anthony, Natalie Michelle, and Lauryn Vanessa. She is further survived by her former husband, Anthony J. Denny, one brother, David F. Dieteman, M.D., and his wife Leah M.; two sisters, Susan M Schmitt and her husband Robert C., Ann D. Thayer and her husband, Richard H., Jr; and one sister-in-law, Mary Dieteman. She is also survived by two aunts, Audrey R. Hershelman and her husband, William J. and Gilnor Dalrymple. Survivors also include several cousins, nieces, nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews.
