Joseph Marshall Reed, son of William and Sally Reed was born March 10, 1862 near Hitt, Mo., and departed this life October 5, 1950 at his home in Downing at the age of 88 years, six months and 25 days.
He was the last of a family of 11 children. He spent his entire life in the Barker community until thirty years ago when he and Mrs. Reed moved to Downing.
He was married to Miss Josephine Barker, February 21, 1884, they have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last February. Two children were born to this union, who with his wife survive him.
One grandson, Leland Riney preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, the daughter, Mrs. T. H. Simmons of Downing and Mrs. D. C. Riney of Memphis; the two sons-in-law; a large number of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Richland Baptist church, was converted in young manhood and lived a life of love and service for his God. He was always a regular attendant at church and Sunday school when his health permitted.
Funeral services were conducted at the Downing Baptist church Saturday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Oscar Rush, assisted by the Rev. L. E. Schudle. Short services were held at the Richland Baptist church with interment in the Richland cemetery.
Body bearers were Ray Kinney,Guffie Groseclose, Charles Tucker, Edwin Cossel, Loyd Gordy and Cecil Cossel. Flower girls were Roberta Seamster, Janet Morgan, Lois Jones and Nancy Mae Morgan. Singers were Charley Riley, Russell Morgan, Mrs. H. H. Lewis and H. E. Gerwig with Mrs. Carl Drummond as pianist.
