Baxter Co. Arkansas History: William Wiley Hayes was born in Habersham Co. Ga. His Parents were Elijah and Mary Weaver Hayes. He married May Holbrook in 1836 in Georgia. They had 11 children, 100+ grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 25 GG-grandchildren. They came to Baxter Co. in 1874. He homesteaded 160 acres where the town of Gassville now stands. Most of his children went to Oklahoma Indian Territory. He and his wife joined them there around 1901. He was a shoemaker and merchant. He had red hair, was Baptist, a Mason, a volunteer in the Mexican War, and served four years in the Civil War under Gen.Robert E. Lee.
