Mildred Nelson, 88, of Albany died Saturday at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.
She was born in Albany, the daughter of David and Sylvia (Tyson) Steckley. She graduated from Albany High School in 1937. She lived most of her life in Albany and had lived for a time in Airlie, Tangent and Shedd.
Mildred married Richard Ernest Nelson on Oct. 29, 1948, in Albany. He preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 1999.
Mildred worked for the telephone company for 40 years, retiring in 1984. She was a longtime member of Willamette Community Church, formerly First Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Albany Rose Society and the Pottery Guild. She was active in journalism and photography early in life. She was a generous woman who volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Her family will remember her as a loving person.
Mildred is survived by her children and their spouses, Mark and Cynthia Nelson of Eugene, Matt and Sandy Nelson of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Nedra and Bill Sohn of Corvallis; seven grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Willamette Community Church.
Private interment will be at Willamette Memorial Park.
