WARNING: There is a lot of unsubstantiated information about Lettice Denny on the Internet.

It is said Lettice was the daughter of James and Margaret Denny. She married Patrick Scott about 1764 and died about 1785. She was said to have been born in County Derry, Ireland. According to this tradition, Lettice had a sister Mary Ann b. 1745 and a brother William b. 27 Sep. 1748 in Paxton, Lancaster Co., PA, and d. 5 Apr. 1832. (See William Denny's grave FAG Memorial #22690972. He appears to be the son of David and Margaret Denny.)

The father, James Denny, was said to have been born in County Derry, Ireland, in 1717. HIs wife Margaret (surname unknown), was said to have been born in 1715 at Paughton, PA. However, no Paughton has been located. Perhaps it was a misspelling of either Paxton or Patton? James and Margaret Denny were said to have married Dec. 24, 1742, in Chester Co., PA, though no marriage record has been located.

Those are the clues we have to go on, though we can't be certain that any of them are facts. They may well be someone's guess without real evidence.

There is a William Denny of Uwchlan, Chester Co., PA, whose wife was named Margaret. His will dated Aug. 29, 1784 was probated Nov. 15, 1784. In the will he identifies his wife Margaret, his daughter Hannah and sons Samuel, David, James and William. He had a grandson William Denny Craig and a son-in-law John Culbertson. There is no mention of Lettice Denny Scott in the will.

Several of William and Margaret Denny's sons served in the Revolutionary War in the 7th Battalion of the Chester County Militia as of 1777. David Denny was captain of the 8th Company, his brother David was 1st lieutenant and his brother William was 2nd lieutenant.

In short, we have not yet identified Lettice's parents. It may be that William and Margaret Denny of Uwchlan, Chester Co., PA, are somehow related.

If anyone finds more evidence of the parentage of Lettice Denny, please contact us.
