Caroline was the fifth of the ten children born to John Adolphus Kay(1815- 1888) and Mary Ann Frederick(1825 – 1908). She was born in Freedom Owen CO,Indiana. She married Lewis Haney, a teacher,3 April 1874, in Newton CO,Indiana. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Mary Maude(17 Nov 1875), Lewis traveled to Texas in hopes the weather would improve his health. As he traveled he wrote many letters to his “Carrie” which are still readable today. It is believed that he went to Caroline’s brother in-law, Alfred R. Light, who lived in Washington CO, Burton, TX. He died in Texas on 26 Nov 1876. There is no record of his burial place. Caroline was a seamstress so she was able to make a living for herself and Maude with the help of family. Caroline’s second marriage on 14 June 1885, was to widower John Marion Rone (2 Mar 1840 -10 Jan 1888). She married for the third time 14 Feb 1892, to widower James McIndoo (6 July 1839 – 27 Aug 1917). Lewis Haney was buried in Texas and both Rone and McIndoo were buried with their first wives. Caroline is buried with her parents in the cemetery on the Kay farm now called the Burton Cemetery.
