She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern Teachers College at Durant, Oklahoma. She received her Master's Degree from Hardin-Simmons in 1951. Mrs. Merriott began her teaching career in 1924 at Shelby, Tennessee. She married Homer J. Merriott on 3 June 1928 at Memphis, Tennessee. In 1933, the Merriott's traveled to Texas, settling in Haskell County in 1941. In 1943, they traveled to Alaska after signing up to work for the Department of Interior as teachers and remained there until the end of World War II. The family moved to Rock Point Indian Reservation at Chinle, Arizona and she continued her teaching in the Community Day School. The family moved to Stamford in 1948 where she continued to teach. Sassy was honored with the Teacher of the Year Award by the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs in 1965. She retired from teaching in 1971. She was a member of the Stamford Pierian Club since 1951. Mr. Merriott preceded her in death. She was a member of the Orient Street Church of Christ, where she worked with youth classes and Vacation Bible School. Sassy was and remains the perfect example of hospitality and good manners.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson - Tucker Reed Gist; one brother - Parnell Sasser.

Survived by three daughters - Pat Murphy, Linda Gist, Judith Prince; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
