John was born in Clark County Arkansas. He came to Texas and Prairie Plains in the early 1850's with his parents. T.T. Stuarts who had a land grant. John enlisted in the Civil War, May 1861. he was in Regiment H. "Porter Guards." He was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg and taken prisoner for some time. While there, his leg had to be amputated. He was discharged in 1863.
John married Mattie Edmondson 12 years later, he was 33 and she was 29. Their children were John E. (married Eva Robertson); Mollie (who married Eaf Rikard); Stella (who married Obie Thomas); Robert (who married Mary Ellen Shepherd.
