PENROD FAMILY HISTORY
VOLUME I 1970

James Dean Penrod was born July 15, 1899, to Amasa Lyman and Hannah Rebecaa Wright Penrod and lived more than sixty years in the Pleasant View Ward of Provo, Utah. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church, having been baptized in the Provo River when he was eight years of age. As a boy, he attended the Page School and graduated from the eighth grade there. He was on the track team and also on the Page School baseball team, where he played the position of catcher for a number of years. In his young life, he was more interested in baseball than anything else and really excelled in it.

He worked hard as a boy; his parents being farmers, there was always lots of work to be done. He would always have to get up really early to get his chores done before school, and then come home and do evening chores after school. As a young boy, he had to herd cows all day, as all the boys had to in those days; and when he was older, he would have to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning during summer to get his breakfast and chores done and be in the fields at daybreak. When just a young teenager, he went to work at the Provo Brick & Tile Company.

On June 1, 1920, he married Jane Irene Lewis at Provo, Utah. To them were born two children: Norma Penrod, born May 7, 1922, and James Lewis Penrod, born April 12, 1931. He also had four grandchildren.

He left the Provo Brick and Tile Company and went to work for the Knight Coal and Ice Company. Later, when electric refrigeration came out, he took a course in Salt Lake City to learn to service electric refrigeration. He was one of the first Refrigeration servicemen in Provo.

At the time of his death, he was associated with Charles Stewart in refrigeration and air conditioning.

His hobbies were gardening and raising flowers. He loved to raise flowers, and always had beautiful flower gardens. He never sold flowers, but always gave them away to anyone he thought would enjoy them.

He sold his home in Pleasant View and moved to Orem, where he lived for fourteen months. It was there he died at the age of 63, on October 2, 1962, a kind and gentle man, whom everyone loved and respected.
