Frederick "Fred" A. Thornton, Sr., 88, of La Grande died March 3 in a local care center.

Interment in Grandview Cemetery. Veterans' rites and honors will be accorded at the cemetery.

Mr. Thornton was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Weiser, Idaho, the son of William and Mary Mayfield Thornton. He was raised and educated in Weiser and Joseph. He attended automotive school in Portland after his discharge from the Army, having served in France in World War II. He was active in his military service at Fort Stevens at Warrenton when a Japanese submarine fired upon the mainland.

He married Florence Wikoff in 1947. The family lived in Portland for a time and moved to Burns in 1962, where they lived for 33 years. He and his wife came to La Grande in 1994.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter; a son and his spouse, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Nine brothers and sisters died earlier.
