The Correctionville News, 4 March 1937, page 1: Time dealt kindly with Joseph Pence and had he lived a few more months he would have attained the century mark. He was a squatter on railroad land following the building of the first railroads through this community. The men who made history in the early days are fast passing beyond the portals. Joseph Wesley Pence was born in Louisville, Kentucky, August 11, 1837, and departed from this life February 27, 1937, at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 16 days. When four years of age he moved with his parents to Cass Co., Illinois, where he grew to manhood and taught in the public schools. In 1859 he was united in wedlock to Margaret Eator. They lived in Illinois for twelve years then came to Iowa. To this union were born nine children. His wife and three daughters preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his departure are: Jiles Pence of Howard, South Dakota, Thomas Pence of Rapid City, South Dakota, C.J. Pence and E.K. Pence of Sioux City, William Pence of Gettysburg, South Dakota, and one daughter, Mrs. T.R. Thom of Correctionville, 22 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church for 50 years. Funeral services were held at 12 o'clock noon Tuesday at a funeral home in Merrill, Iowa, and interment was made in the Rock Branch Cemetery.
