For a time before his marriage and for a few years thereafter, he was the bookkeeper and a salesman for his brother-in-law, Isaac E. Bass, at Carley, Mississippi. Later he opened his own general store at Goss, Mississippi, and operated it for a few years before going to Columbia, Mississippi to live and operate a store there. His store at Columbia burned and he then moved to Gulfport and operated a general store there until his death. He spelled the family name "Wilks".
He married Etha Goss, daughter of Dr. Zeno and Louize Bourn Goss, at Goss, Mississippi, on October 3, 1888. They had the following issue:

Jessie Louise Wilks
