Civil War Veteran, Co E, 17th Vermont Volunteers.
Son of Nelson Stone & Dilia Manore. Death record online is 3/15/1909 at age 62/3/10 which calculates closer to his birthdate than the marker.
Suggested edit: A couple items wrong with this. In 1955 this stone was marked in error. See 3 June 1955 article in Addison County Independent when they added the stone. The local veterans marked the grave in error David K Stone of the 17th was 39 years old in 1864 (fold 3 record). David Stone who died in 1909 was a member of the 10th New Hampshire, born Canada and he was age 18 when he enlisted. He was dish. discharged from the 10th in 1865. (NH Adjutant Gen. report.) His obituary says he is buried in prospect cemetery which matches. His obituary is in the March 18 1909 edition of the Burlington Free Press. The date on the stone is March 5, 1906, but should be 1909 and the 17th VT is listed as his unit. The two records overlap so it isn't that he served in both. Age is way off and David K Stone was born in Elmore VT. Based on Obituary I think the David Stone of the 10th is correct and somehow they screwed it up in 1955. Most important however is this David K. Stone has a stone in Elmore Vermont with the correct birth and death dates....and it says he served in the 17th. See the great VT Civil War link which shows this picture....A great injustice to David Stone has been done. Nobody can be buried in 2 graves.
