William Alfred Huber, 85, of Hanover, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 27, 1924, in Hanover, the son of Leonhard Louis and Florence Beatrice Priest Huber. He grew up in Hanover and was a 1942 graduate of Hanover High School and attended Hanover College before serving in the Army during World War II. After his service, he graduated from Hanover College in 1948. He was a member of Hanover Presbyterian Church. He and his wife moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1948. He attended McCormick Presbyterian Theological Seminary and earned a bachelor of divinity in 1951 and a master's degree in Christian education in 1952. He was ordained by the New Albany Presbytery on May 15, 1951, in Hanover Presbyterian Church. He served churches in Kansas, Illinois and Noblesville before moving to Indianapolis as the organizing pastor of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in 1955. He served the wider church as moderator of the Indianapolis Presbytery and was a commissioner to the General Assembly for three years. He actively served Presbyterian church camps in Indiana. He also served as president of the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis. He pastored Saint Andrew for 33 years. He retired in 1988 and was named pastor emeritus. After his retirement, he and his wife returned to Hanover. In 1988, he was presented with an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Hanover College. He served the Smyrna-Monroe Presbyterian Church and the Jefferson Presbyterian Church for nine years.

He is survived by five daughters, Janet Elizabeth Huber Lowry of Hanover, Mary Katharine Huber Graham of Santa Rosa, Calif., Laura Lynn Huber Nutter and Anne Beatrice Huber Andreasen, both of Madison, and Margaret Jane "Meg" Huber Garrison of Buford, Ga.; one son, Leonhard William "Lon" Huber of Glendale, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane McAfee Parker Huber, whom he married Sept. 3, 1947, and who died Nov. 15, 2008; his parents; two sisters; one brother; and one grandson.

A memorial service was at Hanover Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Hanover Cemetery.
