Funeral Services For Utah Pioneer To Be Held Sunday

Funeral services for Samuel N. Slaughter, 85, pioneer and early settler in southern Utah, who died at the family home, 1724 Fifth East street, Thursday, will be held at the Joseph William Taylor mortuary chapel Sunday, Jan. 24, at 3:30 p.m. The body may be viewed at the chapel prior to the services. The body will be taken to Beaver for addition services and interment Monday.
Mr. Slaughter was born at Utenhage, South Africa, Oct. 16, 1840, and migrated to Salt Lake at the age of 20, crossing the plains with Captain Johnson's company. For nine years he worked in Salt Lake as a tanner and currier, and then moved to Beaver to take charge of a tannery there.
In 1880 he was elected assessor and collector of Beaver county and held the office nearly 12 years. For 11 years he was postmaster and conducted a mercantile business at Frisco, Utah. Then he returned to Salt Lake.
Mr. Slaughter was a member of the high priests quorum for many years. He was universally respected where known.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Annie E. Slaughter, five sons, seven daughters, 39 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Martha A. Stanfield, Santa Monica, Calif., and Mrs. Sarah Bee, Oakland Calif.
