Koch: ( b. Nov 17, 1879, d. Jan 11. 1978) "Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia (Kanzler) Koch were held in Ritzville on Jan 14, 1978. She was a sister of Mrs. David (Gertie) Weber, Odessa. Mrs. Koch, who was an early pioneer resident of the Ritzville area, passed away on Wednesday, Jan 11, at the ago of 98. She had been a resident of the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home since 1969. She and a daughter, Henrietta, moved to Hillcrest Manor not long after Mrs. Koch's husband died. Two other daughters, Rosalia and Katherine, preceded Mrs. Koch in death. Lydia Koch was Mrs. Weber's oldest sister. Gertie is now the last surviving sister of the Kanzler family. Mrs. Koch was one of the last surviving members from a group of immigrants who came to the Ritzville area by covered wagon. In the year 1893, her parents, George and Katherine Kanzler, Lydia and another sister, Mary Kanzler (Thiel), traveled from Culbertson, NE and settled four miles west of Ritzville. Lydia married John (Peter) Koch on June 27, 1900. Rev Graedel, who established the first Congregational church in the Ritzville community, performed the wedding ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Koch spent the rest of their lives in and around Ritzville. They farmed northwest of Ritzville for some years, then retired to live in town. Survivors include Mr. Koch's daughter, Henrietta, of Hillcrest Manor; a son-in-law, Harland Eastwood of Lopez Island; grandchildren, Ann Olsen in Huntington Beach, CA, and Harland Eastwood Jr. of Seattle; 5 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her sister, Mrs. Davie Weber. Lydia Koch's two brothers, Sam and Dan and a sister, Mary Thiel, preceded her in death. During the service, sacred music sung to Lydia Koch's memory by Marty Sackmann included ‘In The Garden' and ‘Beyond the Sunset.' Mrs. Koch was a church member of the Philadelphia Congregational church and a lifetime member of the Ritzville Rebekah Lodge. She had many friends in Odessa, as well as Ritzville, who mourn her passing." (Odessa Record: 2-02-1978)
