Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon for John Riley Kelley, prominent Pemiscot settler who died suddenly at his home here last Wednesday. The services were conducted by the Rev. G.A. Ellis of Senath, former pastor of the Steele Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. M.A. Massey, pastor. Interment was made in the family lot in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Kelley is the oldest settler of this vicinity, he coming here in 1900. He was born April 20, 1857 in Tennessee. At one time Mr. Kelley owned the greatest part of the city of Steele and was then a very prominent merchant but he retired several years ago. He was an active worker in the Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Johnnie Phillips, four sons, Max L., Fred L., and Albert of Steele and W.R. Kelley of Lubbock, Texas, besides several grandchildren, Joe Alice Rhodes, Talbert, Madelion, Wanda, Pat, Marjorie, Frances, John Riley and Mike Lee Kelley all of Steele and Floyd Edwin, Clifford and Mary Lou Kelley of Lubbock, Texas, and one great grandchild, Kelley Joe Rhodes.
