Vance Sherrill (Hap) Aker, age 77, of Radford, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Mr. Aker was born Jan. 20, 1922 in Smyth County, the son of the late Wilburn W. & Mary Goodpasture Aker. He was a retired employee of N&W Railway with 37 years of service and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lana Aker Smith, and a sister, Mildred Dority. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Campbell Aker; one daughter & son-in-law, Sharon & Carl Duncan of Radford; two sons & daughter-in-law, Donald R. & Anne Aker of Roanoke, and Michael Aker of Radford; one brother, Robert D. Aker of Pulaski; one sister, Mamie Scott, Marion; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Arthur Harris and the Rev. Ronald Duncan officiating. Burial followed in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford where members of VFW Post #776 of Radford conducted military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford was in charge of arrangements.
