Among some of our ancestors who came to the United States was John C. Lehman, one of the earlier settlers of the newly formed Sonnenberg area of Wayne County, Ohio. The eldest of Christian Lehman’s sons and daughters, John C., earned enough money to bring his wife and then four daughters to America in 1831.
John C. Lehman was married and baptized in Switzerland. He married Maria Newkommer, 1798 – 1880 and had four children in Switzerland. Upon his arrivial in America, John C., made his way to the Sonnenberg area where others of his home in Switzerland had come previously (1819 & 1821). He and his wife became members of the Sonnenberg Church and bought a farm in Sugarcreek Township (farm #383). They eventually had five more children. Their children were:

2. Fannie Lehman……………Married Isaac C. Lehman
3. Maria Lehman…………….1827 – 1848
4. Elizabeth Lehman………..1829 – 1873
5. Christian J. Lehman……..1831 – Married Sallie Suter
6. John Lehman……………..1835 – Married Elizabeth Gerber
7. Peter Lehman…………….Born & died 1837
