Kenneth Burrows' Rites Held at Kermit, Texas

Memorial services for Kenneth Edwin Burrows, Sr. were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 27, in the First United Methodist Church in Kermit, Texas with Rev. David Matkins pastor of the church officiating. Mr. Burrows died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 1982 in Athens, Greece, at the age of 73. He was the brother of Henry Burrows and brother-in-law of Flossie Burrows, both of Tipton.

Born August 25, 1908 in Rhome, Texas, Burrows had lived in Tipton during his childhood and later moved to Odessa, Texas and to Kermit in 1936. He married Alice Virginia Kingsbury on November 20, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri. Long active in community affairs, Burrows was a charter member of the First United Methodist Church of Kermit and was serving on the Board of Trustees of the church at the time of his death. He was also a charter member of both Kermit Downtown Lions Club and Kermit Chamber of Commerce. He served as the Lions Club's first president from 1936 to 1937 and was president of the chamber in 1952. Burrows was one of the founders of Kermit State Bank in 1945 and served on the Board of Directors of the financial institution from 1945 to 1979. He was also one of the founders of Permian Savings and Loan Association of Kermit. He had served as a director of the savings and loan association from 1959 when it was founded until his death. He was also servings as a vice president of Permian Savings when he died. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Kermit Independent School District from 1936 to 1944 and was Mayor of Kermit from 1943 to 1946. He was named Kermit Citizen of the Year in 1966 and was chosen Boss of the Year in 1975. He held a charter membership in Winkler County Country Club and was a nominee for the Winkler County Senior Citizens Award in 1981. He was active in civic work and was a leader in the local unit of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Fund. Active in professional organizations, Burrows was a former director of the West Texas Pharmaceutical Association. He was also a member of the American Association of Retail Druggists and held the Outstanding Pharmacy Award for serving 50 years in a pharmacy. A pioneer Kermit businessman, Burrows owned and operated L-B Drug in Kermit from March, 1936 until October 1, 1975, when he retired. Other survivors include his wife, Alice of the home of Kermit; one son, Ken Burrows, Jr., also of Kermit, and two granddaughters. The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Kermit or to the American Cancer Society.
