John C. "Jack" Cavanaugh was the son of Edward Cavanaugh b.1828 in Canada and Malissa Hubbard b.1828 in New York. Before his parents died, John, his brother Michael, and his sister Mary Lida Cavanaugh immigrated to Decatur, Macon Co, Il. (He married in Decatur in March of 1865.)

(John's brother Michael Cavanaugh was b 1846 in Westport, Canada and his sister Mary Lida Cavanaugh was b. 1849 in Westport, Canada. They also immigrated to Macon Co sometime before 1865.

John C. married Mary "Frances" Alsbury March 30, 1865 in Decatur, IL. They were the parents of the following children:

After the death of his first wife, John remarried 31 Aug 1899 to Catherine Moreland b. ?-d. 1908.

John Cavanaugh Dies in Hospital

Came to Macon County from Canada in 1867-Farmed near Mt. Zion
John Cavanaugh died at 5:45 o'clock Tuesday morning at ST. Mary's hospital. His death was caused by paralysis. He was 66 years old.
Mr. Cavanaugh was born at Westport Canada in February, 1844. We cam tot he United States when he was 21 year old, coming directly to Decatur. He soon engaged in farming near Mt. Zion and carried on that pursuit that for fifteen years. Then he returned to Decatur and engaged in teaming for about twelve years. Then he re-engaged in farming for eight years. He retired several years ago.
Six years ago Mr. Cavanaugh suffered a stroke of paralysis. He recovered from that to a a certain extent and was able to get about until two week ago, when he was again stricken.
LEAVES EIGHT CHILDREN
Mr. Canvanaugh was a big hearted man and was always trying to do something for others less fortunate than himself.
He is survived by eight children, four daughters and four sons. The children are Mrs. Anna Lambur of Quincy, Mrs. Mollie Harvey of Peoria, Mrs. Dora Garver of Decatur, Mrs. Lulu Sheridan of Decatur, Chelsie Cavanaugh, Charlie Cavanaugh and Elmer Cavanaugh of Decatur and John Cavanaugh of Sullivan. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lida Beard of Decatur nd one brother, Mike Cavanaugh, formerly of Decatur and now of Oklahoma. He was twice married his first wife dying twenty-three years ago and his second wife two years ago.
The body was removed to Moran's undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Sheridan, 418 East Prairie street. The interment will be at Greenwood.
