Richard served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-24L "Maiden Montana" #44-41549, 23rd Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York prior to the war.

His father (step-father) is noted as being L. A. Bridgeland who resided in Livingston County, New York. It is unknown at this time if Richard was also from Livingston County or not.

B-24L #44-41549 took off from APO 719, Guian, Samar Island, Philippines with 6 other B-24's on a bombing mission over Mindanao Island, Philippines. After passing through a large cloud B-24L #44-41549 went missing. They were later to have been noted as crashing on Mindanao Island for an unknown reason. B-24L #44-49840 also crashed on this same mission.

Richard was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on June 10, 1952.

Service # O-463434

The "Maiden Montana" flew 40 missions and had 3 kills of Japanese aircraft during the war.

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
