Soldotna resident Albert Bodkin died March 12, 1996, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna after a long bout with cancer and heart problems. He was 69. A funeral was held at Peninsula Memorial Chapel. The Rev. David Beckett officiated. Burial followed at Spruce Grove Memorial Park in Kasilof. Visitation was at the funeral home.

Mr. Bodkin was born March 20, 1926, in Dunbar, Pa. He worked as a coal miner and in construction. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1948. He then joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of corporal. Mr. Bodkin arrived in Alaska in 1957. He worked in construction from Fairbanks to the North Slope and on roads and many other projects. He moved to Soldotna in 1959 and worked for Frontier Sand and Gravel as a heavy-equipment operator until illness forced him to retire in 1979. Mr. Bodkin was a life member of Soldotna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10046. He enjoyed traveling, his cars, poetry and Louis L'Amour novels. His family said: ''He was a highly spiritual man who had the care and compassion to help or come to the aid of someone in need or less fortunate. During his life, he helped many people with his honesty, straightforwardness and sense of humor. He forever looked on the bright side of life. He was a loving husband and will be missed greatly.'' Mr. Bodkin was preceded in death by his father, Albert Sr., mother, Susie Klink Bodkin, and sister, Olive Bodkin Stahlbach.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor ''Virginia'' Achayok Bodkin of Soldotna; sister, Margaret Leapline of Pennsylvania; nephew, Albert Stahlbach of Kenai; and many other nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Central Peninsula Unit, P.O. Box 2165, Kenai 99611-2165.
