("The County, pg. 249. James Dougall still kept store on Main Street in the '30's. Although his correspondence shows he was a man constantly beseiged by creditors, he did a good business. He was a leader in the Methodist Church, was a Justice of the Peace, held the first high school in his store. As a man, Dougall was steady and careful and minded his own business. He died in 1839 and left no strong memories, no urge to name public buildings for him; but the kind of person he had been strongly influenced both Hallowell village and the Prince Edward Methodist church.")
