Charles R. Hagerman, 83, retired Illinois law enforcement official, formerly of Lorain County died Thursday at his home in Freeport, Ill.
Born in Mendon, he began his career as a police officer in Lorain County in 1928 and later became a deputy sheriff and special investigator for the Ohio State Prohibition Department. Mr. Hagerman retired in 1963 as chief of police in Freeport. He was a retired member of International Directory Experts of Identification, Illinois Peace Officers, Illinois Chiefs of Police, Freeport Police Department and Stephenson County Sheriff's Department.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Mr. Hagerman served as the Freeport Township supervisor before retiring in 1971.
An Army veteran, he was in the Signal Corps from 1929-32 in Panama, Nicaragua and Monmouth, IN.J.
He was a member of Freeport First Lutheran Church since 1933 and also belonged to Evergreen Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Valley of Freeport.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Holt of Blanchardville, Wis., and a granddaughter, Cathryn Elverum of Apple Valley, Minn. Mr. Hagerman was preceded in death by his wife, Edna C., on Nov. 24,1985, and by a sister. Friends may call 3-7 p.m. today at Walker Mortuary, 321 W. Main St., Freeport, EL, and from noon until 2 p.m. services Tuesday at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion. The Rev. Leah Matthews will officiate.
Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery.
