Memorial Resolution

PROFESSOR EMERITUS JOHN R. ENDWRIGHT

(July 11, 1921 - March 28, 2000)

John Endwright, former dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, died on Tuesday, March 28, 2000 in Bloomington. Professor Endwright was unique among the faculty at Indiana University since he was a native of south-central Indiana. He was born on July 11, 1921 in Orleans, Indiana, and spent many summers of his youth in Bloomington while visiting his aunt's farm in western Monroe County.

Professor Endwright was a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II. His flight missions were carried out in the South Pacific theatre of operations. Before being sent overseas, he married another native Hoosier, Martha A. Fiscus, whom he met while visiting in Bloomington. John and Marty were the parents of three children: Anna Marie Dixon, Johnna Sue Binkley, and Randy.

All of his university work was completed at Indiana University. After graduating from Orleans High School, he enrolled in the University and received his B.S. degree in 1946 and his M.S. in 1947. In addition, he completed 44 hours of graduate work beyond the master's degree.

Beginning in 1947, he was appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Physical Education for Men. In 1948, the duties of Administrative Assistant to then-Dean Willard Patty were added to his responsibilities. He rose in rank from an Assistant Professor in 1957, to Assistant Dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, to Associate Dean of the School of HPER. He was appointed as Dean of the School of HPER in 1967, and he served in this capacity until 1975. He became Professor of Physical Education in 1969. Professor Endwright assumed a teaching position after relinquishing the Deanship. Also, he accepted the position of Coordinator of College and University Placement for the School of HPER, as well as responsibilities in alumni relations. He continued in these positions until his retirement in 1983.

He served on many university committees during his tenure, such as admissions, scholarship, John Edwards Trust Fund, and honors, to name just a few. He was also an active member and chairperson of many School committees. He edited the School bulletin and the School newsletter for many years.

Professor Endwright was active in the community as President of the PTA, President of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club, and as an elder in his church. He was also recognized as a "Sagamore of the Wabash" by then-Governor Otis Bowen. He was available whenever called upon to serve in any capacity, including Secretary-Treasurer of the School's alumni association and president of a local housing group.

His professional services included serving as chairperson of a number of state, midwest, and national committees. His most notable position was that of national chairperson of the Deans and Directors Council of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. He also served as an editorial consultant for several publishing companies as an evaluator of manuscripts. He received an honor award from the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation for his accomplishments.

John Endwright devoted his entire professional career to administration, teaching, and counseling. He was known by hundreds of school people, both in and out of his field, as "Mr. Indiana Physical Educator." During his tenure as Dean, he always maintained an open door policy. He was available to students and faculty regardless of the circumstances. His period as Dean was characterized by kindness, fairness, and common sense. Another watchword was his adherence to delegation of responsibilities. His goal for all was to have everyone reach their potentials. His whole life was devoted to Indiana University and its welfare.

Professor Endwright spent his retirement years with family and friends, including winters at a home in Florida. He also served the School of HPER in various alumni relations capacities.

Professor John Endwright was a credit to his family and his institution, both of which he loved dearly. It is entirely appropriate that this memorial resolution be included as part of the minutes of the Bloomington Faculty Council at Indiana University. Copies of this resolution should be duly forwarded to his widow, Ms. Marty Endwright, and their children, Anna Marie Dixon, Johnna Sue Binkley, and Randy K. Endwright.
