Alfred Warren Davis Sr. was born about 1834 at Newmarket, New Hampshire, son of Stephen H. and Clara (Demeritt) Davis.
On 17 Jul 1859 Alfred married Eliza Jane Bonzey, 17, daughter of Zenas Lockwood and Betsey A. (Waters) Bonzey, at Oxford, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.
Alfred and George P. Davis, along with William M. Davis, Freeman Davis and James L. Davis, two brothers and their three uncles, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Alfred and James E. Sheppard, future brothers-in-law, both marrying Bonzy girls, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
At the time of his enlistment in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Alfred .
On 12 Mar 1862 his brother, William M. Davis, died at Leicester, Massachusetts, unmarried, of consumption contracted as a prisoner of war at age 23.
On 6 Aug 1862 Alfred mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, giving his occupation as gun-maker, and being credited to the quota of Leicester, Massachusetts. He was 28 years old.
On 17 Sep 1862 he was wounded at The Battle of Antietam severely in the mouth, and he died on 22 Sep 1862 at Hagerstown, Maryland, of wounds. He was 28 years old.
He was buried at Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Maryland, Site 954; and on 18 Apr 1863 Eliza, his wife, received a pension to surviving family member based on his service with certificate 13926.
Freeman, his nephew, outlived Alfred and died on 8 May 1864 at The Battle of the Wilderness, Orange County, Virginia; and George, his brother, outlived Alfred and died on 8 May 1864 at The Battle of the Wilderness, Orange County, Virginia.
(NOTE: With the deaths of Freeman, Alfred, William and George -- Stephen and Clara Davis had lost three sons and a grandson in the war.)
