Apparently a native of Skaneatelas, NY. He enlisted in Company H, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Cleveland, Ohio, March 12, 1864. He was discharged, Nov. 4, 1864 to accept a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 13th Infantry Regiment, United States Colored Troops.


He was subsequently killed in action at the Battle of Nashville, TN, Dec. 16, 1864. His remains were apparently returned to Skaneatelas for burial. Upon his enlistment in the 103rd O.V.I. his occupation was listed as "clerk."
