Less than 12 hours after he had a slight stroke of paralysis, Wilbur E. Pettus, 76, died this morning at 4:15 o'clock at his home on Randolph Street. Mr. Pettus complained of slight dizzy spells yesterday morning but he was not thought to be seriously ill until yesterday afternoon.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Sophie Pettus, he is survived by one brother, M. O. Pettus of Chattanooga; a number of nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Mrs. R. E. Pettus of Huntsville.
Mr. Pettus was a life-long member of the Baptist church, an active member of it affairs and was a staunch prohibitionist. For a number of years he was engaged with his brother, the late R. E. Pettus, in the wholesale grocery business in Huntsville.
Mr. Pettus attended the University of Alabama in 1878 and although he did not receive a degree, he took an active interest in the older alumni. He was often called upon to gather information regarding deceased graduates for officials of the school.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow from the residence with the Rev. John J. Mefford, assisted by the Rev. Neill G. Stevens, officiating. Interment will follow in the Athens, Ala., cemetery with J. R. Poole in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers will be A. S. Hodge, J. E. Kelly, Dr. E. V. Caldwell, W. P. Miller, H. J. Certain, W. C. Rowe, Judge Paul Speake and D. S. Dunnavant.
Honorary pallbearers will be Judge T. W. Jones, Harry M. Rhett, S. R. Butler, Cutler H. Rice, A. M. Booth, A. R. Steele, W. E. Popejoy, Kirby Cartwright, J. E. McCaleb Sr., R. E. Spraggins, J. F. Collier, T. J. Young, Shelby White, W. F. Esslinger, S. T. Terry and Gus Marx.
The names of both the active and honorary pallbearers were selected by Mr. Pettus more than two years ago, according to his wife.
