Lindley, Susan Lynette Hill gifted educator, loving wife, mother and grandmother, dedicated and active lay member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Susan H. Lindley died at Northfield Hospital, Northfield, Minnesota, the evening of December 27th after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born on July 4, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Victor E. Hill III and Lois Rahenkamp Hill. She attended Mount Lebanon High School and received her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass., in 1967. She married John M. Lindley on June 17, 1967, in Mount Lebanon, Pa. Duke University awarded her a Ph.D. in Religion in 1974. After receiving her doctorate, she taught at North Carolina State University, the College of William and Mary, and at St. Olaf College in Northfield for thirty years. When she began at St. Olaf in 1976, Susan Lindley was the first full-time female and non-Lutheran faculty member of the college's Religion Department. Her book, "You Have Stept Out of Your Place": A History of Women and Religion in America (1996), is a standard in the field of American religion. In addition to her duties as a full professor, Susan volunteered countless hours to All Saints and various Episcopal committees, particularly the national church's General Board of Examining Chaplains and its Minnesota diocesan counterpart, which she currently chaired. She was elected as a lay Deputy from the Minnesota diocese to the Episcopal Church's General Convention in 1994, 1997, and 2003. In 2000 she was a Deputy First Alternate. She leaves behind four children: Jonathan (and Donna) Lindley of Rochester Hills, Mich.; Nathaniel (and Emilee) Lindley of Richfield, Minn.; Kathryn (and David) Olson of Minneapolis; and Stephen Lindley of Northfield. She was proud of her four grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Lindley of Rochester Hills, and Mason and Max Lindley of Richfield. She is also survived by her husband, John, and her brother, Victor E. Hill IV, of North Adams, Mass. A visitation for Susan Lindley will be held at the Bierman Funeral Home, 1316 Division Street, Northfield, from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday, January 1, 2006, and a memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Cathedral of Our Merciful Savior, 515 NW 2nd Ave., Faribault, Minn., on Monday, January 2 at 2 PM.
