Alvan was the paternal grandfather of the Village of Holland, Lucas County, Ohio's first female mayor, Mabel Hovey.

He was also a solider during the Indian Wars, serving at the Columbia Barracks, Clark County, Oregon Territory during the 1850 census. He moved to Ohio at the age of 10.
