TOPSHAM (Aug 11): Winifred C. Long, born Winifred Christina Kiessling on April 17, 1921, in Boston, Mass., died Aug. 6, 2009, at the Higlands in Topsham.

She was the daughter of Irving and Ethel Kiessling.






Wini's main love in life was art. She started as a commercial artist in Boston after graduating from New England School of Art. She also attended Boston Museum School, Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla., and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Wini was a member of and exhibited at many art organizations, including the New England Watercolor Society, the International Society of Marine Painters, the Copley Society of Boston, the Sarasota Art Association, Longboat Key Art Center and the Art League of Manatee County in Florida. In Maine she was a member of and exhibited with numerous art groups. Locally she was a member of the Pemaquid Art Group for more than 35 years.

Wini maintained her own gallery, The Wini Long Gallery, first in Round Pond and then for the last 30 years in New Harbor. She had two books published of her art work, "Maine Pen & Ink Sketches" and "Maine Lighthouses in Watercolor." Her work was also included in many other publications.

She taught watercolor workshops Maine, Florida, Massachusetts, and Cuba. She was a high school art teacher at Leavitt High School in Turner and was well known for her watercolors of coastal Maine harbors, old homes and barns, and her large detailed flower paintings.

She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Kenneth E. Long; three daughters, Belinda and her husband, Ron Fletcher, of New Harbor, Bonnie and her husband, Peter Tucker, of Augusta and Barbara Peakes of Sedona, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Wini will be held at the New Harbor Cemetery in New Harbor on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bristol First Responders, 104 South Side Road, New Harbor, ME 04554.
