Rev John L Brunett, SJ

John L Brunett, Age 80, died Saturday of complications from diabetes at his order's infirmary in Philadelphia PA.

Born in Rockville, he was a 1941 Georgetown Preparatory School graduate. After study at Villanova University PA, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1942 and was ordained a priest in Woodstock MD in 1955.

After teaching English at St Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia PA, Fr Brunett became the first Catholic chaplain of Good Samaritan Hospital in Northeast Baltimore. He held the post from the hospital's opening in 1968 until 1980, and is honored by a plaque in its lobby. He then became an academic counselor at Loyola College for 21 years until his retirement in 2001. "The man had a genius for friendships," said the Rev. Joseph Kennedy, a fellow Jesuit. "He was a ... friend to all the world. His students voted him the most popular Jesuit on campus on more than one occasion." Students named a dormitory in his honor and a school rowing scull bears his name.

He was the devoted son of the late James Paul and Lydia (Almoney) Brunett; beloved uncle of two nieces, Linda Brunett of Rockville MD and Lisa Slye of Ramona CA. Also survived by a legion of grateful students and admiring friends.

Friends may call at the Alumni Chapel of Loyola College on Wednesday from 5 PM to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 8 o'clock tonight in the Alumni Chapel at Loyola College, 4501 N Charles St. Interment will take place in the Woodstock College Jesuit Cemetery, Woodstock MD, at 10 AM on Thursday, February 27. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jesuit Seminary Fund, 7400 York Road, Suite 401, Towson MD 21204.
